When selecting a baitcasting reel, gear ratio is the most important spec to match to your technique. High-speed reels (7.1:1 and above) excel at burning reaction baits like lipless crankbaits and swimbaits. Medium ratios (6.4:1–6.8:1) are the all-around workhorse for jigs, Texas rigs, and most soft plastics. Slower ratios (5.4:1–6.2:1) are designed for deep-diving crankbaits where you need consistent crank pressure. Drag rating and bearing count matter too — look for a minimum 15 lb drag for flipping and punching applications.
